Approximately 40 minutes from Rezident Corbu, Histria Fortress preserves the remains of the first recorded city on the territory of present-day Romania. Located near Lake Sinoe, the archaeological site can be explored on a half-day trip, whether you are staying in Corbu, Constanța or Eforie.
14 Centuries of History on the shores of the Black Sea
Histria was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletus and remained inhabited for approximately 14 centuries. The city passed through Greek, Roman and Roman-Byzantine periods, traces of which can still be seen today.
In Antiquity, Histria stood on the shore of the Black Sea, beside a gulf that gradually became present-day Lake Sinoe as the geography of the area changed. Its location turned the city into an important trading centre, with a harbour, temples, public spaces, homes and workshops.
The site was identified in 1868 by French archaeologist Ernest Desjardins, while systematic archaeological research began in 1914 under the direction of Vasile Pârvan. Excavations continue to this day, and some of the artefacts discovered here are displayed in the site’s museum.
What to see at Histria Fortress
Your visit can begin at the museum, where you will find amphorae, pottery, inscriptions, glass objects, jewellery and bas-reliefs uncovered during archaeological excavations.
The route then continues outdoors, through the remains of the ancient city. You can see its fortifications and gates, the temples of the sacred area, the Roman baths, basilicas and traces of former homes. The landscape adds another dimension to the experience, with the ruins overlooking Lake Sinoe, where the ancient gulf once stood.
Allow approximately two hours to visit the museum and explore the outdoor site. During summer, it is best to arrive in the morning or towards the end of the afternoon, as there is little shade along the route. Water, sun protection and comfortable footwear are recommended.
Opening hours
Histria Fortress can be visited throughout the year. During the summer season, from 1 May to 30 September, the Histria Museum Complex is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00. During the off-season, it is open from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30.

Getting there from Rezident locations
The drive from Rezident Corbu to Histria Fortress takes approximately 40 minutes. You can plan your visit for the first part of the day, then return to Corbu for the rest of the afternoon.
From Rezident Tomis Marina, the journey takes approximately one hour. From the Rezident locations in Eforie, allow around one hour and 20–30 minutes. Travel times may vary depending on traffic, particularly during summer weekends.
